Pot Marigold, Bon Bon Mix

Calendula officinalis (Pot Marigold, Bon Bon Mix)
Calendula officinalis

Pot Marigold (aka Calendula) - are as easy to grow as marigolds, however, this variety sports large 2 1/2 in. blooms. This mix contains an array of colors such as, lemon, apricot, yellow and orange.

Calendula does have edible flowers, however they are quite bitter; it is grown more for its beauty and medicinal value. For example, the petals make a nourishing cream for the skin, used as an aid in treating acne and cold sores. An infusion is good for digestion and is said to relieve colitis and symptoms of menopause, and a tea made from steeping the petals can be used as a rinse to lighten and brighten hair.

Pot Marigold makes an attractive cut flower and can be grown in the vegetable garden to help with insect control.

Interesting Notes

Calendula comes from the Latin word that means "first day of the month." Also known as "poor man's saffron."

Pot Marigold, Bon Bon Mix Growing Tips

Attractive as borders in the garden, they also grow well in containers. Calendula prefers full sun to partial shade. It is weather hardy and can withstand a light frost. As these cold-hardy annuals often continue flowering until the ground freezes completely, deadhead the plants to prolong the bloom and keep plants looking their best.

To harvest: pinch the flower head off the stem. Pull each petal. Dry them in the shade on paper as the petals tend to cling to any kind of screening. Keep the petals from touching each other as this can lead to discoloration. Store in a moisture-proof container in a dry cool place.
