Calamint, variegated
Calamintha grandiflora ''Variegata''
Appealing to the eye in and out of bloom, Calamint or"beautiful mint," is aptly named for its show of randomly variegated foliage that has splotches of creamy white on its pale green, mint-scented leaves. Pink tubular flowers adorn this colorful plant throughout the entire growing season making it attractive to bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. A mild flavored mint, with a slight peppery taste, is best when added to peas and pork dishes. It makes a nice flavored tea as well.
Interesting Notes
This is a resilient plant that does well in heat and drought. Although in especially hot areas of the country, consider planting in a somewhat dappled shade part of the garden. Does well in containers. Self seeds true to the cultivar. Leaf color is best in spring and in light shade. Sometimes known as "Showy Savory."
Calamint, variegated Growing Tips
While you can plant this mint from seed in early spring, the recommended method is from herbaceous stem cuttings. You may also divide root stock in early spring. Calamint will not form the invasive, underground stolons like true mints (members of the Mentha family), but will self-seed if allowed.
