Eucalyptus, Silver Dollar
Eucalyptus E. gunnii ''Silver Dollar''
Other closely related varieties in this family grow to be enormous trees in warmer climates, but in zone 5 eucalyptus is an annual. A favorite in fresh flower arrangements and 'swags', eucalyptus is recognizable by its distinctive silvery blue-green, rounded leaves. It is equally beautiful in the garden, and gives a strong minty scent wherever it is. An antiseptic and aid in inhalation, it has many strong medicinal properties and makes one of the most common essential oils.
Interesting Notes
Eucalyptus is native to Australia, and Australian Aborigines have used eucalyptus in their healing rituals. Now it grows prolifically in parts of North and South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. In Brazil, eucalyptus was used for papermaking.
